In August 2023, the department acquired a Siamese clappered valve, specifically designed to enhance water supply efficiency during rural firefighting operations. The primary goal of this device is to provide a faster, uninterrupted water source in areas with limited access to the city’s water supply (Rural Operations-Box 200).
The design of the valve enables two engine/pumpers to be connected simultaneously. The clapper mechanism within the valve directs water flow to the side with the highest pressure. As one engine/pumper exhausts its water supply, the clapper automatically switches to the other side, allowing uninterrupted water flow, while providing an open connection for a new engine/pumper to connect to the original side.
This technique, known as the “rural hitch,” is being used by several neighboring departments, so this will allow us to work more uniformly with such departments during our rural operations.
This proactive approach addresses the department’s rural operations, offering an additional water-supply option to the one now being satisfied with the porta tank.
